![]() ![]() This series was important in my formative years and I hope they can continue to inspire bright young minds for many years to come. ![]() I learned to love myself and ignore the ideals of physical beauty that others tried to impose on me. Without this series, I would not be the happy, comfortable free-thinker that I am today. She fights the power and she makes personal sacrifice, all things that we have to learn to do eventually. I found the romantic portions of the series to be appropriate, very different to the awful themes I read in the Twilight series at the same age. ![]() She still craves male attention, like we all do from a very young age, but she doesn't require their help to get anything done. Kickass female lead who takes care of herself and takes on the issues of the world, not needing male counterparts to help her. I read this series religiously from when I was 11 and it taught me some very valuable lessons that I might not have learned otherwise. This series is absolutely fabulous! Bright young minds need to learn about vanity, overuse of technology and not giving in to societal expectations in their formative years. ![]()

![]() ![]() Marella and Jensi return and we get an insight into how Sophie’s focus on the Black Swan/Neverseen conflict affected her friendships. The kids (minus Keefe, Tam and Linh) return to Foxfire and we get to see them struggling to fit back into normal society. The Black Swan continues to keep secrets about Sophie’s purpose, their identities and their plan for the future however they do start to be a bit more open with Sophie about some aspects of their operations. Although Keefe told Sophie he had noble intentions of finding out what the Neverseen were up to so he could stop them his trustworthiness throughout this book is questionable, however he also grows a lot while he is away from the other characters and has to rely on his own judgement and really figure out what he believes in. Lodestar picks up after Keefe has joined the Neverseen, an organisation that is hell bent on wiping the social order to the ground so they can build it back up in a way that suits them. Note this review will have spoilers for the previous books in the series. You can read my review for the first book in the series, Keeper of the Lost Cities. I have been a fan of these book for year now, since just before the second one came out. This series is aimed at middle graders however the later book show more ya themes. ![]() Lodestar is the fifth book in the Keeper of the Lost Cities series by Shannon Messenger. ![]() ![]() Hugh is captured by muties, but instead of being killed, he becomes the servant and, eventually, friend of Joe-Jim, a two-headed mutie. ![]() Hugh longs to be a Scientist - the learned members of the crew who read books and tend to important ship-related duties. The book follows the long and strange journey of Hugh Hoyland. The ship is their whole world and the idea that anything could be “outside” or that the ship moves is unfathomable, much like humans on earth once thought the earth was flat or that the sun moved around us and that anything else was heresy. There are no windows, so there is no way to see outside. The bulk of the crew is killed, the ship stops moving and the remaining people on board are split into two factions: the crew and the cannibalistic “muties.” After several generations, both groups forget everything about the mission or that there is even anything that exists outside of the ship. The story takes place on a colony ship that was on its way to another world when it is seized by mutiny. Robert Heinlein frequently pokes at religion in his books, questioning and analyzing it, but “Orphans of the Sky” is a truly unique and frighteningly real story that explores and questions the origins of religion. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() He became a doctor of law at the age of 24 at the Jesuit College of Clermont, Paris, and was ordained a priest by Bishop Claude de Granier and stationed in Geneva in 1593.
